Come Back Home
Chapter 24 - Hudson
H udson’s sleep was fitful. He tossed and turned a number of times, drifting in and out of consciousness. His dreams were lucid and surrounded the same thing.
Laura.
Each time he woke, he had been in a situation where he was unable to save her. Fingers would slip from his grasp as she disappeared off a cliff and into the sea. In another dream, he pulled up his car to her house just as fire bellowed out from every opening. She was hanging out of the window, no longer conscious. How she was not tumbling out, he didn’t know. Then he was running as fast as he could but despite the effort, his legs felt heavy. Then in another dream he heard her screaming from her car, and as he located it, within a few steps it exploded.
Time and time again, Laura died with him unable to save her. She was the damsel in distress, and he was less the knight, and more of the village idiot.
Was this what he was trying to do? Save her? Or had she been trying to save him?
Were they putting too much into the relationship? Forcing it to work? Laura certainly built things up, but bolted easily, only to return. He hoped she was just a fiery person, who exploded, and then needed a time out to contemplate over their actions.
At 3am, he walked out of his room and made a pot of tea. He grabbed his phone, and felt his heart skip as he saw there was a message. This was it. A black and white response.
When he opened it, he saw it was a video. It had only been sent twenty-minutes earlier.
He clicked on it. It was Laura.
She looked sad, as she composed herself ready to speak, “Hudson, hi….” She paused, as if almost thinking about stopping right there. She even made a move towards her phone to terminate the video, but then she thought better of it and continued, “I care deeply for you… I guess I’m in a bad place. I get jealous, and… Look, I can see she’s attractive….” She wiped away some tears. “I don’t know. Maybe we should wait until this case is over? And… and if you want to call it quits now then I don’t blame you… It’s hard…” she stopped. It was like her words had suddenly dried up. She moved towards the phone, picked it up and before stopping it she concluded with, “Please give me a ring tomorrow, okay?”
Hudson paused and looked at the last frame of video. The frozen sad look on Laura’s face. He wanted to reach into his phone and pull her out – then throw his arms around her.
He glanced at the clock. It was too early to call. But this was important.
He watched the video once more, and decided he had to call her there and then. Some things can’t wait until the morning.
It rang a few times before her sleepy voice answered.
“Hi Hudson,” she said, the tiredness disguising her feelings towards him.
